Can you spell SCAM?
As a homeowner in DuPage County, I recently received a letter from a company saying that I needed a Certified Copy of my deed. And, that they would provide it for only $70.00.
Now, in 30 years of selling homes, I've never heard of a certified copy of a deed being required. In fact, I've never seen a certified copy of a deed.
So, a call to the DuPage County Recorder's Office, 630-407-5400. A pleasant lady said that if I wanted my deed certified, I could bring it in and they'd do it for $5.00 plus 50 cents per page if it was over a certain limit. DuPage County Recorder Fred Bucholz posted a Web site warning about the letters.
In fact, at the bottom of this letter is the following:
MANY GOVERNMENT RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE FREE OR AT A NOMINAL COST FROM GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.
So, moral of this posting...don't believe everything you get in the mail. Especially if it comes with a very "official" looking envelope. Always check with the appropriate governmental authorities.
Visit the County of DuPage's website: http://www.co.dupage.il.us/
Lots of interesting information. I also noticed links to individual towns in DuPage County.

I just received one in Oak Lawn. If I did not check a search of this, I would of been bilked out of $79.50. Thanks for sending this info out to unsuspecting new home buyers.

Due to nescience I ordered such a deed copy. My check was cashed immediately by National Deed Service, Inc. but I haven't received a deed copy as of now, HALF A YEAR later! The "service" phone number is usually not occupied. If you might have the luck to talk to a representative, you will only hear empty promises.
In my eyes this is criminal! Be aware of National Deed Service, Inc. (www.nationaldeed.com).
